Superintendent Gauch praises Fowler in open letter

Harrisburghs southernil

Mayor of Harrisburg and businessman Dale Fowler, Republican candidate for Senate District 59 – Southern Illinois, recently thanked Southern Illinois School Superintendent Mike Gauch for writing an open letter subsequently posted on Fowler’s Facebook campaign page.

Gauch told constituents that while political races are not his strong suit and his position requires neutrality, he felt the call to speak out publicly on behalf of Fowler.

“Many times, in the heat of battle, things are said or liberties are taken that would not be done in what we would consider ‘normal circumstances’,” Gauch wrote. “This letter is merely an attempt to discuss the truth as I see it from my post.”

Having served as Superintendent of Harrisburg Unit No. 3 for two years, Gauch recounted how Mayor Fowler supported the school system’s building project at Harrisburg High School, worked alongside the school regarding Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts, and advocated for other initiatives to the schools’ ultimate advantage.

“Beyond that…his tireless work with his foundation to help make sure children have the clothes and resources they need for school has been admirable,” Gauch wrote. “He also has been a [major] contributor through his foundation to assist the district with their summer food program where children are provided a hot meal at no charge every day through the summer.”

Gauch pointed out that the school district had once considered discontinuing the program, but that it remains strong due to donations from Fowler’s foundation.

“He has always been first in line publicly and privately when our district and children have been in need,” Gauch said. “I have no reason to believe that will not continue, regardless of his position or office.”
