Former SIU softball coach to be honored

Former Southern Illinois University softball coach Kay Brechtelsbauer will be honored with a series of events Sept. 10-11 in Carbondale.

Brechtelsbauer, a member of the school's Hall of Fame, had a 633-438-2 record as head coach of the Salukis. The program made College World Series appearances in 1970-71, 1977-78 and 1991 under her tutelage, and the Salukis' softball field recently was dedicated as Kay Brechtelsbauer Field.

Events for the celebration weekend include a chance to watch and take photos of next season's Salukis practice. A football tailgate, including food and drinks, will be hosted by the softball program starting at 3 p.m. Sept. 10 on Saluki Row ahead of SIU's game against Southeast Missouri at 6 p.m. The cost is $10 when buying upon RSVP.

Saluki softball will host a doubleheader against John A. Logan and Kaskaskia starting at 11 a.m. Sept. 11. There is no admission for celebration attendees.
