Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is leading Democrat Hillary Clinton by 39 percent in southeastern Illinois, a new Ogden & Fry poll commissioned by the Liberty Principles PAC, taken on Friday and Saturday, said.
The poll, taken in House District 118 and Senate District 59, shows Trump leading Clinton by 39 percent. The poll has a margin of error of 4.5 percent.
In the District 118 state House race, Republican contender Jason Kasiar is challenging 13-year veteran state Rep. Brandon Phelps (D-Harrisburg). Phelps has not faced a challenger since 2008. Kasiar's platform includes job creation by revitalizing the downstate coal industry. His plan includes investing in coal research to develop new coal-related technologies. Kasiar also said he would voluntarily limit his tenure in the Assembly.
Republican candidate Dale Fowler is facing off against 13-year veteran state Sen. Gary Forby (D-Benton) for the District 59 state Senate seat. Fowler is a fifth-generation southern Illinoisan who grew up on a family farm. As mayor of Harrisburg and a business development officer for Peoples National Bank, Fowler has had the opportunity to promote southeastern Illinois as a business-friendly region and a great place to raise a family.
The general election will take place Tuesday, Nov. 8.
The Liberty Principles PAC was founded by Dan Proft, who also is a principal of Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which owns Southeast Illinois News.
