Wabash Community Unit School District #348 Board of Education met Jan. 21.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Wabash Community Unit School District #348 met in Regular Session on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 in the library of Mt. Carmel Elementary School.

President Schuler called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Vice President Neil Earnest called the roll. Attending in addition to the vice president were Theresa Hocking, Jared Alka, Kyle Peach, and Tim Schuler. Ryan Peter and Janice Alka were absent.

Also present were Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bleyer, Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS) Principal Jake Newkirk, Mt. Carmel Elementary School (MCES) Principal Sheila Odom, Chief of Operations Steve Holt, Director of Technology – Kevin Smith, Chandler Madden –WSJD, Corey Woolsey – Mt. Carmel Register, Dawn Drone –WCEA, Betsy Ross –WCTA, Brianne Foster, and District Secretary Kim Zimmer.

Schuler led the pledge to the flag.

 Laura Taylor resigning as MCJHS Student Council Sponsor effective the end of the 2019-2020 school year

 Seamus Smith requesting paternity leave of absence from March 12, 2020 and will return at the end of spring break (April 13, 2020)

A motion to approve the consent agenda was made by Hocking and seconded by Jared Alka. A roll call vote was taken. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. Ryan Peter and Janice Alka were absent.

Reports

Steve Holt – Buildings and Grounds Projects

Mr. Holt reported on the projects that had been completed at the high school. He noted that the Alumni Association had helped to fund the library project. He told the Board that the gym floor cupping issues had been repaired and the scorer’s booth received a new look. Also, with the addition of the new maintenance grant, repairs will be made to the asphalt surrounding the Jr/Sr high school and the concrete parking lot. The exterior of the school will also receive a power washing.

Move to go to Closed Session

At 7:15 p.m., Peach moved to enter into Executive Session pursuant to Section 2(c)(1) of the Open Meetings Act: “The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees.” The motion was seconded by Jared Alka. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. Kyle Peach was absent. Ryan Peter and Janice Alka were absent.

Open Session

A motion to return to open session was made by Hocking and seconded by Jared Alka. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. Ryan Peter and Janice Alka were absent. The meeting returned to open session at 7:26 p.m.

Closed Minutes Approved

Earnest moved to approve the minutes of the closed session as read in closed session. Jared Alka seconded the motion. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. Ryan Peter and Janice Alka were absent.

New Business

Employment of Personnel

A motion to approve the following employment recommendations was made by Peach and seconded by Jared Alka.

ADMINISTRATIVE

Brianne Foster -MCGS Principal beginning August 1, 2020

(Replacing Chris Taylor who moved to MCHS Guidance Counselor)

TRANSFERS

Robin Jones -MCES Special Ed Paraprofessional effective January 6, 2020

(Replacing Laura Powden who resigned)

Ivy Shehorn -MCES Individual Assistant beginning February 3, 2020

(Replacing Robin Jones who transferred to Spec Ed Parapro)

Karen Dardeen -MCHS Athletic Ticket Manager beginning 2020-2021 school year
