The deadline for Senate and House bills to move to the other chamber for consideration recently passed. Lawmakers put in long hours debating and voting on legislation as the deadline approached.
Although many bills did not progress out of their respective chambers, this does not signify the end for these bills. “There are still procedural tools available, including deadline extensions and the use of shell bills,” which can be used to amend existing legislation, allowing a proposal to continue forward.
House Bill 2827, a proposal garnering significant attention, did not advance this session. The bill aimed to impose stringent regulations on parents opting to homeschool their children. Senator Fowler commented, “Its failure to pass out of the House was welcomed news,” but emphasized the need for opponents of the bill to remain alert as it could be brought back later in the spring session.
As the General Assembly proceeds into the latter half of its session, it will shift focus to considering bills from the opposing chamber. The deadline for House Bills to clear committee in the Senate is set for May 9.
