Southern Illinois track and field members Josh Freeman and Warren Hazel earned medals at the recent 2016 NACAC U-23 Championships in El Salvador.
The event features athletes from North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Freeman, a recent graduate competing for Team USA, came home with a silver medal in the shot put. Hazel, a sophomore competing for St. Kitts and Nevis, earned the bronze in the men's 400-meter dash.
Freeman got the silver with a throw of 63-feet, 2¾-inches on his second attempt. The medal added to his trophy case that includes a gold medal from the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships and a first-team All-American honors.
Hazel finished his race in a personal-best time of 45.81 seconds. That mark broke at 14-year-old national record for St. Kitts and Nevis and is also the fifth-best mark at Southern Illinois. In May, Hazel won the Missouri Valley Conference outdoor title in the 400 dash in 46.18 seconds, which was just his second time running the event in the outdoor season. His time was the 12th fastest in the NCAA West Region at the time.
