Eldorado Community Unified School District No. 4 Board approves new K-8 math curriculum

Eldorado Community Unified School District No. 4 Board of Education met Thursday, July 21.

Here are the minutes as provided by Eldorado Community Unified School District No. 4:

REGULAR BOARD MEETING

July 21, 2016

Board President, Jason Kasiar, called the regular meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Board members present and answering roll call were: Ron Bradley, Stacy James, Preston Justice, Jason Kasiar and Larry Parks. Absent: David Bartok and Keith Oglesby. Present: Supt. Ryan Hobbs, Rick Cox, Blake Bradley, Billy Tippett, Cody Cusic and Kim Butler, recording secretary. Others: Ed Kerkhover, Eric Brannock and Matt Allen (EEA President).

Recognize visitors for public comment: None.

Larry Parks made a motion to approve the budget hearing and regular meeting minutes for 6- 16-16 (Ref to Doc Reg FF-1-1). Preston Justice seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Eric Brannock from Country Financial Insurance updated the board on the school’s insurance. Premium and coverage went up due to inflation. Eric stated that we are under insured and the board should consider possibly adding more coverage. Larry Parks made a motion to approve school insurance with County Financial (Ref to Doc Reg FF-2-1). Preston Justice seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Preston Justice made a motion to approve the June, 2016 Treasurer’s Report (Ref to Doc Reg FF-1-2). Ron Bradley seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby. 

Preston Justice made a motion to approve the payment of Unit #4 bills (Ref to Doc Reg FF-1- 3). Ron Bradley seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Stacy James made a motion to approve the second reading of board policies 6:255, 6:260, 6:260-E, 6:270, 6:280, 6:280-AP, 6:290, 6:300, 6:300-E2, 6:310, 6:310-E, 6:315, 6:320, 6:330, 6:340 (Ref to Doc Reg FF-5-1). Preston Justice seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Stacy James made a motion to approve the first reading of board policies 8:20, 8:20-E, 8:25, 8:25-AP, 8:30, 8:30-AP, 8:30-E1, 8:30-E2, 8:70, 8:90, 8:95, 8:95-AP, 8:95-E1, 8:95-E2, 8:100 and 8:110 (Ref to Doc Reg FF-5-2). Preston Justice seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Preston Justice made a motion to approve elementary, middle school and high school student and teacher handbooks (Ref to Doc Reg FF-6-1). Jason Kasiar seconded the motion. Roll call vote was taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Jason Kasiar made a motion to approve increasing lunch fees at all three schools (Ref to Doc Reg FF-6-2). Preston Justice seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Preston Justice made a motion to accept the resignation letter from Margherita DiMaggio as Spanish teacher (Ref to Doc Reg FF-4-1). Ron Bradley seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Preston Justice made a motion to approve a leave of absence for Valera Oglesby (Ref to Doc Reg FF-3-1). Jason Kasiar seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby

A proposal was given by Cody Cusic for a new math curriculum for grades K-8. Cody stated the proposal would save the district $30,035.97 over 6 years. Ron Bradley made a motion to approve the new math curriculum (Ref to Doc Reg FF-6-3). Preston Justice seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Mr. Hobbs gave an update on school funding and property tax freeze.

Ed Kerkhover gave an update on summer work projects and discussed the improvements to the track at the sports complex.

Jason Kasiar made a motion to go into closed session at 7:54 p.m. regarding employment district personnel, collective negotiation matters between the public body and its employees and review of executive session minutes from January 2016 to June 2016. Preston Justice seconded the motion. All aye. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

The board came out of closed session at 9:39 p.m.

Ron Bradley made a motion to approve closed session minutes as read in closed session. Stacy James seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Larry Parks made a motion to employ Taylor Barr as an elementary teacher for the 2016-2017 school year (Ref to Doc Reg FF-3-2). Preston Justice seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Bradley, James, Justice, Kasiar and Parks. Voting no: None. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Ron Bradley made a motion that all closed session minutes from January 2016 – June 2016 remain closed due to discussion of personnel (Ref to Doc Reg FF-6-4). Preston Justice seconded the motion. Roll call vote taken and motion carried. Voting yes: Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.

Preston Justice made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 9:41 p.m. Ron Bradley seconded the motion. All aye. Absent: Bartok and Oglesby.
