Illinois children services department adds mindfulness to YMCA programs

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services met Aug. 23 to add mindfulness practices to YMCA programs.

Here are the meeting's minutes, as provided by the department:

Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Institutional Review Board Meeting Minutes August 23, 2016 CHICAGO Debra Dyer Mark Holzberg Paula Jaudes Robin Albritton Brooke Taylor ON PHONE Arricka Newingham EXCUSED Janet Ahern CALL TO ORDER Debra Dyer called the meeting to order at 2:02 p.m. A quorum was present. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION: Mark Holzberg made a motion to approve the minutes from June 28, 2016. Robin Albritton seconded the motion, and a unanimous vote from the remaining board members carried the motion. FOLLOW UP Amy Dworksy. Evaluation of a Home Visiting Pilot for Pregnant and Parenting Youth in DCFS Care. Mark talked to the researcher and requested more information to assist the board. Researcher sent requested information. MOTION: Mark Holzberg motioned to approve the administration of the follow up only and not the administration of the drug. Robin Albritton seconded the recommended motion and a unanimous vote from the remaining board members carried the motion. Lindsey Weil Davis. Prevention of Accidental, Sleep-Related Infant Deaths: Current Sleep Practices, Caregiver Beliefs and Promotion of Safe Sleep Practices through Effective Preventative Interventions. Focus groups are being used to identify questions that are needing to be asked. Literature says studies are cultural differences (in her literature reviews) instead of parenting differences. 2 MOTION: Robin Albritton motioned to approve the administration of the follow up only and not the administration of the drug. Paula Jaudes seconded the recommended motion and a unanimous vote from the remaining board members carried the motion. NEW PROPOSALS Alissa Conde. EMPOWER: Embracing Mindfulness, Peace, Originality, Well-Being, Efficacy and Resiliency. Mark sent a link to the board. Beautifully written and great program for the YMCA. Would like to see the tools/assessments used. Cannot use the word ‘ward’ anymore. Change it to ‘youth in care’. Large amount of tools/assessments. How did researcher know that there are a large number of children at the YMCA? MOTION: Mark Holzberg motioned to approve the proposal. Robin Albritton seconded the proposed motion, Robin Albritton abstained and a unanimous vote from the remaining board members carried the motion. OTHER Paula Jaudes Article. Article was sent out to be reviewed by the group. No comments. Next meeting was scheduled for September 27, 2016 at 2 PM. The meeting adjourned at 2:25 p.m.
