Track-and-field Olympian and national champion Connie Price-Smith, a former Southern Illinois athlete and coach, will be inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame Nov. 3 in New York City, siusalukis.com reported.
Price-Smith was a four-time Olympian and won 25 national titles in discus and shot put. Price-Smith earned a silver medal at the 1995 IAAF World Championships – making her the first U.S. female athlete to medal in the event in 35 years. Other highlights include winning the shot put and discus competitions at the 1992 Olympic Trials – being the first woman to accomplish that in 32 years – and being on 34 international U.S. Squads.
At SIU, she won the Missouri Valley Conference indoor and outdoor titles in 1985.
Price-Smith was the women's head coach for Team USA at the 2016 Olympics and was an assistant coach at the 2008 and 2012 Games. She coached for 14 years at SIU and won MVC Coach of the Year honors five times.
Price-Smith currently is the head track and field and cross-country coach at the University of Mississippi.
