Four members of the Southern Illinois University football team were placed on the 2016 Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) All-Newcomer Team, according to www.siusalukis.com.

Safety Jeremy Chinn and running back/return specialist D.J. Davis, both true freshmen, and transfers cornerback Craig James and quarterback Josh Straughan were named to the squad.

Chinn led MVFC freshmen in interceptions last season and ranked in the top 20 in the league in tackles per game and interceptions per game. Davis was fifth in the league in all-purpose yards per game and was second among freshmen in the nation in kick-return average.

Straughan was second in the MVFC in passing yards per game and third in efficiency, while James led the conference in passes defended per game.

Also, SIU wide receiver Billy Reed earned MVFC All-Academic First Team honors. Reed, a repeat pick for the team, had 45 receptions for 580 yards and four touchdowns last season. He also graduated in May with a 3.72 grade-point average in finance.
