Illinois History Forum takes place at Lincoln Presidential Library

The Illinois History Forum, a project of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, began Jan. 12.

The forum takes place twice monthly to discuss books, movies and museum exhibits pertaining to Illinois history.

“We’re excited to offer a new forum for folks to get together and explore Illinois’ rich history,” Alan Lowe, executive director at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, said. “From Native American mound builders to modern architecture to -- of course -- Abraham Lincoln, this group will have plenty to talk about.”

The Jan. 12 event, which was free, included a discussion about "Lincoln's Springfield Neighborhood," authored by Bonnie Paul and Richard Hart. The book describes the people of the neighborhood, how they interacted with the Lincolns and life in general during Lincoln's time. Hart moderated the discussion.

The forum concept began as a book club that has met at the presidential library for several years.

“As the bicentennial of statehood approaches, we want to give folks an opportunity to learn more about the history of Illinois,” State Historian Samuel Wheeler said. “You don’t need to be a trained historian to participate. Anyone with a genuine interest in the history of our state will be welcomed into the group.”

More information about upcoming forum topics is available online.
