A community college speech team has defeated competitors from 10 universities to take top honors at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Feb. 4 forensic contest.

The Southern Illinois College Forensic Falcons bested teams from Bradley, Western Kentucky, McKendree and Illinois State universities, among others.

Individual honors went to Falcons team member Cassidy Maynard of Harrisburg, the top scorer in the contest.

Coached by Paul Cummins, Jenny Billman and Dr. Tyler Billman, the Falcons went head to head in such categories as communication analysis, informative speaking, prose interpretation and after-dinner speaking.

Members of the team are: Shay Wood, Joli Murphy, Gabe Motsinger, Chanse Tullis, Kaydee Dycus, Carrice McDaniel, Haley Rushing, Cassidy Maynard, Nick Cofield, Noah Taylor, Rachael Hooven and Shannon Welker.
