The Southern Illinois Miners have hired St. Louis native Garrett Bauer as their pitching coach, the team's website reported recently.
Bauer was the pitching coach at St. Louis Community College prior to being hired by the Miners. He started there in 2013 and also was the Frontier Greys pitching coach in 2014. He also worked as an instructor at Balls-n-Strikes Youth Softball and Baseball in Brentwood, Missouri.
In 2004, Bauer was drafted out of Missouri Baptist University by Arizona in the 27th round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He also pitched for three seasons — 2006-08 — for the Rockford Riverhawks in the Frontier League, going 23-16 with 317 strikeouts and a 3.24 earned-run average in 369 innings.
The pitching-coach spot opened when Preston Vancil, who held the position for three seasons, resigned, citing a desire to spend time with family.
