A dozen Salukis stepped up their games this year to garner Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) President’s Council Academic Excellence Awards, according to the school.

The honor requires a student to have a minimum 3.8 GPA, participate in a sport for at least two years, and be within 18 credits of graduating.

The MVC award is the conference's highest honor, and this year more Salukis earned the award than any class since 2005. SIU finished with the second-highest number of students to earn the honor, one behind Northern Iowa University’s 13.

The honored Salukis were Ryan Sabo, Kim Nebo, Brooke Cusumano, Kristie Yang, Merri Anne Patterson, Jessa Thomas, Kiley Handley, Kristina Ksarjian, Lauren Stockton, Polina Dozortzeva, Meagan Monaghan and McKenzie Dorris.

Overall this year, more than 200 Saluki athletes received recognition from the MVC for their work in the classroom and as members of one of SIU’s sports teams.
