Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Darryl Neill a motion to approve the minutes of the previous meeting held on 7-24-2017 as presented;

Citizens Request:

Ken Kovac informed the Council the written and physical testing for new a hire for Fire Fighters was this past Saturday. We have 5 that qualified when the Council gives approval to hire.

Mayor’s Report:

Moved by Alderman Mike Hall and second by Alderman Chuck Short to make a motion to Adopt a Resolution requesting closure of Route 45 for the Annual Labor Day Parade on Monday, September 4th beginning at 10 am;

The Mayor stated we have two bids to do the window tint. The lowest bid is from a Metropolis resident, Jessie Duncan, who will turn in his final bid in for approval next week.

We have approached two painters and are waiting on the second bid to come in before we approve the bids.

Updates*

The Mayor shared the uptown bathrooms are now open; thanking everyone for all the voluntary work to make this possible. He also acknowledged and gave praise for all the inhouse work done by City employees.

Notice the newly renovated Council room; the work was done as a team and we are all proud of the updated interior changes he commented. Harrah’s donated a 48” TV to our Council room and we want to say Thank You for that.

Lafarge has donated several 100 tons of rock to the City of Metropolis for the new football field, Soccer Field and will compete the extended parking area at the American Legion ballpark.

The 2017 Eclipse, August 21st is generating excitement and bringing tourists to our area. The Eclipse’s duration is at its longest point in Carbondale, Illinois. There are Eclipse activities all weekend and the day of in the City of Metropolis for everyone to enjoy.

Hotel owners from Kansas City, Missouri came to look at the two dilapidated hotels here and stated this was more then they wanted to tackle. We still need to take action on these places and will keep the Council updated.

Corporate Counsel;

The City has been approached about selling the property at 409 West 8th Street. We will treat this like the other properties we sell and run the ad for three consecutive weeks and open the sealed bids at Council.
