Putting smiles on kids' faces is one way Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) gives back to his community, and his most recent success was an ice cream at the Custard Stand in Sesser, according to his website.
The social was a celebration of the completion of a summer reading program that Severin sponsored this summer.
“It is important that kids continue to learn and read throughout their summer break,” Severin said in a press release. “This helps them to maintain the knowledge and skills they learned from the previous school year, which otherwise could be lost.”

Children who completed the program also received certificates from the Illinois House of Representatives.
Severin also announced that he is holding satellite office Hours at the Benton Public Library from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
Comptroller Susana Mendoza’s staff will be available as well.
