The Delta Regional Authority (DRA) awarded a total of $1.4 million in local projects to five cities in Southern Illinois, including, Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) said in a press release recently.
In Benton, more than $650,000 will go toward modernizing Franklin Hospital’s Digital Mammography system and construction in the Rend Lake Conservancy District. DRA’s mission is to support economic opportunities across eight states and 252 counties through a federal-state partnership, its website says.
“The State of Illinois is proud to partner with the Delta Regional Authority in job creation, business development and infrastructure improvements," Gov. Bruce Rauner said, according to a DRA press release. “DRA investments help us ensure that all Illinoisans have the best quality of life possible and access to high-quality, good paying jobs right here in Illinois.”

At Franklin, $140,404 will be used to replace the analog breast imaging system with one that has digital capabilities, so the hospital will meet federal, state and American Radiology standards. A total of $515,000 will go toward building a second discharge pipe for the Rend Lake Conservancy District’s water treatment plant. The new pipe will provide proper water pressure and distribution to 170,000 customers in five counties.
Other cities receiving funds in the region include Cairo, Carbondale, Eldorado and Goreville.
