Fairfield Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on June 18.
Recently, Fairfield Memorial Hospital representatives were invited to a Susan G. Komen dinner and awards ceremony where the hospital was awarded a $4,000.00 grant in recognition of our outreach 3-D Mobile Mammography Services. The Diagnostic Imaging Department has been offering Mammography Services through the use of a 3-D Mobile Mammography Unit in Fairfield, Cisne, Albion, and Carmi. The goal of bringing the unit out into communities that do not have hospitals is to make is easier and more convenient for women with work or transportation constraints to receive their regular Mammograms and to increase awareness of the importance of early detection through regular screenings.
The Mammography Department at FMH has been American College of Radiology accredited for over 20 years and is annually inspected by the IEMA division of Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety for MQSA compliance (Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1994) and offers screening and diagnostic mammograms. The technologists performing mammograms are registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in mammography and radiography.
“We are very honored to be named as a recipient of this Grant by the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Through our outreach program we have been able to provide women with easier access to having a mammogram screening performed. In one instance this year, we had a patient who decided to stop by our mammography truck on a whim. Her whim proved to be fortuitous as our equipment detected that she had a mass in one of her breasts. Further testing revealed that she had breast cancer and due to early detection her prognosis is a positive one. If it was not for our outreach services, her cancer could have gone undetected resulting in a less than positive outcome.” stated FMH CEO Katherine J. Bunting-Williams.
