Fairfield Memorial Hospital issued the following announcement on July 17.

Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s AHEC program hosted a free Health Careers Summer Camp on June 19th, 2018 that was open to any high school student wishing to attend. Attending were 18 students from 6 different counties (Wayne, Edwards, Clay, Hamilton, Jasper & Clark).

The morning of the camp, students arrived at Fairfield Memorial Hospital and were greeted by Ashlee Johnson RN, Health Careers Director, and Sarah Hopfinger RN BSN, AHEC Director. They began the day with a tour of the facility where they were educated on a variety of services the hospital provides.

Following the tour they met with the EMS and Air Evac and were able to get a better understanding of the services they provide to the community. Jared Blanton with the Fairfield Fire Department came and demonstrated how to properly use a fire extinguisher and gave the students a brief explanation of all the components to the fire truck. The students were then led back indoors for some in class training on how IM/IV injections and CPR and defibrillators work here at FMH. Debbie Krieg RN, Infection Preventionist, demonstrated the hand hygiene experiment with glo germs. April Greifzu, CDM, CFPP Director of Dietary Services, provided a fun science experiment making ice cream and fizzy sherbet.

Once lunch was finished the students then had a variety of activities including a skeleton race, x-ray activities and learned about splinting. Kindra Schnicker, RRT, RCP, CCT Cardio-Pulmonary Director, joined the class to demonstrate the effects smoking has on the lungs. Kelli Locey PTA of the Therapy Rehabilitation Department, demonstrated a Tens Unit to the class. Bingo and drawings were later held to top off the day of fun-filled events. Each student was given a t-shirt, lunch bag & gift card. A door prize of an Apple Watch was won by Hannah Moore.

"I think it is important for students to see that there are many more careers in health care than being a Doctor or Nurse. The hospital would not run without Housekeeping, Registration & Dietary just to name a few!!" said Ashlee Johnson RN, Health Careers Director.

“FMH is proud to host this camp every year. We enjoy being able to teach students about all of the wonderful things our organization is able to provide to our patients. We hope that we have inspired at least half, if not more, of the attendees to pursue a rewarding career in healthcare after they graduate from high school and college,” stated Katherine J. Bunting-Williams, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Fairfield Memorial Hospital.
