Hardin County to use former state work camp as a jail

Springfield

House Bill 130, which changes control from the state to the county for a closed down work camp in Hardin County, passed the House of Representatives on Nov. 15.

The bill, sponsored by Reps. Natalie Phelps Finnie (D-Harrisburg) and Terri Bryant (R-Mt. Vernon), passed with 98 voting yes, zero voting no and one voting present.

At the House session, Finnie said the bill was created to transfer control of Hardin County Work Camp, which was shut down a few years ago, to local control to be used as a jail.

"We’re taking something that has been shuttered and moving it now to something that is usable for a local area," Bryant added. "It will provide much-needed space for that county’s incarcerated population. It’ll also provide a lot of jobs for that area."

Hardin County Work Camp closed down in 2015 due to budget issues.
