The price of local government in 2017: City of Harrisburg

The City of Harrisburg budget was $18.45 million for its 2017 fiscal year, or $4,990 per household.

That's an increase of 11.3 percent from 2016, when the city spent $16.57 million, or $4,482 per household.

Harrisburg has 3,698 households and a population of 9,032.

Since 2001, the City of Harrisburg budget has grown by 59.7 percent, from $11.55 million. The city population has fallen 3.1 percent over the same period, from 9,318.

Salaries accounted for 18.4 percent of city spending in 2017. Harrisburg property taxpayers paid $3.40 million for 50 full-time employees and 12 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 64 full-time employees and 20 part-time employees, and spent $2.81 million.
