With the month of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Illinois state Rep. Darren Bailey (R-Louisville) is urging all state residents to take action.
“We all have mothers, grandmothers, sisters, wives, daughters, aunts and cousins who may have to deal with this disease at some time in their lives and we all need to know more about it to be able to understand and deal with it if it impacts our own family,” Bailey said in a press release. “While you cannot prevent cancer, it is important to be proactive about your health.”
Statistics reveal that about 12 percent of women and one in 100 men will suffer from the disease at some point in their lives, with the National Breast Cancer Foundation adding that genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors can play roles.
Among the leading genetic factors are gender, age, race, family history, personal health history, menstrual and reproductive history. Environmental and lifestyle factors can include a lack of physical activity, poor diet, drinking alcohol and radiation or hormone replacement therapies.
Bailey is urging people to consider the National Breast Cancer Foundation as a primary source of information.
