Welcome

Dr. Schuler welcomed the group to this annual tradition of bringing together partners on the local level. This is also a celebration of the work that is collectively done for all of the communities represented in the District.

Dr. Schuler noted the importance of having a strong system of education in order to have a strong community and vice versa. The collaboration and work that is being done together to provide all kinds of services and support around the communities were noted.

All local officials introduced themselves and the areas they represent.

Dr. Schuler shared information on the state of District 200 schools, along with Dr. Silagi and Mrs. Murphy. This included the following:

 Shared the annual State of our Schools video for 2019.

 One of the initiatives the District is working on, “Portrait of a Graduate”.

 The goal is to determine what are the qualities and skills our students should have when they graduate and leave the District?

 Providing students experiences so they have options for the future, not just academic skills.

 Workforce trends need to be considered.

 D200 is an extremely diverse school district; a study showing diverse groups outperform homogeneous groups in both social and economic sectors was noted.

 The group was asked to participate in the thought exchange survey to answer the question “what are the qualities and skills our graduates should have when they graduate?” using either the QR code provided or the paper copy available. This process will allow all to add to the conversation.

 The opportunity to respond will be available through February 2020. To date over 1200 responses have been recorded from various groups – students, staff, community groups, etc.

 A group of leaders will gather to review the feedback and bring the information back out to the community.

 This will become an actionable framework moving forward.

There was discussion with the local officials on the following:

 Questions regarding thought exchange exercise and how the information will be disseminated into the community. The thought exchange tool will help with the curriculum work in the district, look at future program opportunities, as well as be a professional learning piece.

 The potential impact on the budget and future goals of the district.

 Sharing of information with partners may allow those groups present to assist in some of the planning in the future for their strategic plans.

 Update on the Jefferson Early Childhood Center construction and future ribbon-cutting ceremony.

 Analysis of population trends in the District; use of demographer information from 2017 and enrollment committee. Big picture showing the numbers should hold pretty steady; there are some developments in the southern part of the district, and there are some population shifts in the programs offered (increase in English Learners, etc.).

 The per-student spending for the District – slightly under the state average.

 New school report card data as related to sight-based expenditures (ESSA – Every Student Succeeds Act); reality is Districts are not spending the same amount on each student – dependent on the needs of the students.

 The District is producing above average results with spending below the average.

 The people and groups represented in the room contribute to the successes of the District.

 The need to keep talking, collaborating, and solving problems for the betterment of the students.

 The recently completed multi-year debt restructure by the District which saves the community $10 million in future debt payments.

Dr. Schuler and President Paulsen thanked everyone for attending and sharing.
