Illinois state Rep. Darren Bailey, R-Xenia, is signaling out the new law that doubles fines for motorists who drive around stopped school buses for special praise among the more than 250 set to go into effect Jan. 1.

“I am proud to be the sponsor of this increased fine for people who illegally pass stopped school buses while they are stopped to pick up or drop off our children and grandchildren,” Bailey said in a press release. “We believe that the possibility of higher fines for these moving violations will help deter people from taking dangerous chances and help stop accidents and putting the lives of students at risk.”

Violators will now see first-offense fines double to $300 and second violations skyrocket to $1,000.

Bailey is also voicing his support for a new law that requires civic courses be taught to soon-to-be released people from the Department of Corrections and Department of Juvenile Justice. The classes are to be overseen by nonpartisan civic organizations and will cover such topics as current affairs, governmental institutions and voting and democracy.

The new year will also bring about laws that extend the time school districts have for replacing school board members to a full two months and mandate the topic of “consent” in age-appropriate material for sex education.

Finally, a law now allows individuals who own an associate's degree or 60 hours of accredited college in subjects other than law enforcement to be eligible to join the Illinois State Police.
