Wabash Community Unit School District 348 Board of Education met Oct. 21.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Wabash Community Unit School District #348 met in Regular Session on Monday, October 21, 2019 in the library of Mt. Carmel Elementary School.

President Schuler called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Secretary Janice Alka called the roll. In addition to the secretary, those present were Tim Schuler, Neil Earnest, Kyle Peach, Jared Alka, Ryan Peter, and Theresa Hocking,

Also present were Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bleyer, Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS) Principal Jake Newkirk, Mt. Carmel Grade School (MCGS) Principal Chris Taylor, MT, Carmel Grade School (MCGS) Assistant Principal Alyson Hicks, Mt. Carmel Elementary School (MCES) Principal Sheila Odom, Chief of Operations Steve Holt, Director of Transportation Sharon Thombleson, Kevin Madden -WSJD, Dawn Drone -WCEA, Betsy Ross-WCTA, Danielle Ewald -WCTA, Ashton Gordon -MCES, Amy Price -MCES, Ashley Knapp -MCGS, Andrew Banks, Keisha Banks, Amanda Banks, Brian Banks, Amy Powers -MCHS, Regina Paddick -MCHS, Laura Taylor -MCJHS, Sarah Morris -MCGS, Nancy Vargo -MCES, and District Secretary Kim Zimmer.

Schuler led the pledge to the flag.

-Nina Geiling requests Maternity Leave of Absence from March 2, 2020 through April 17, 2020

Dr. Bleyer noted that the Illinois Science Assessment results were in and District #348 did very well. A motion to approve the consent agenda was made by Janice Alka and seconded by Hocking. A roll call vote was taken. All present voted Aye, Motion Carried.

Reports Social Workers - Nancy Vargo, Sarah Morris, Laura Taylor, Regina Paddick, Amy Powers 

The District's social workers each gave a short power point on their efforts to assist the districts' students in all aspects of their educational and emotional success.

PEVULP AAA

Move to go to Closed Session 

At 7:25 p.m., Peach moved to enter into Executive Session pursuant to Section 2(c)(1) of the Open Meetings Act: "The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees." The motion was seconded by Peter. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried.

Open Session 

A motion to return to open session was made by Peach and seconded by Janice Alka. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. The meeting returned to open session at 8:04 p.m.

Closed Minutes 

Approved Janice Alka moved to approve the minutes of the closed session as read in closed session. Hocking seconded the motion. All present voted Aye, Motion Carried.

New Business 

Deactivated Bus Bids 

A motion to accept the highest bid from Johnson Truck Sales, $2,100 for the four (4) deactivated buses, was made by Peach and seconded by Ryan Peter. A roll call vote was taken. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried.

Activity Buses

After a brief discussion regarding the need and use for the 14 passenger activity buses, Dr. Bleyer recoinmended that the district purchase two of them. A motion to approve Dr. Bleyer going out for bid for (2) new activity buses was made by Janice Alka and seconded by Earnest. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried.

Employment of Personnel 

A motion to approve the following employment recommendations was made by Hocking and seconded by Janice Alka.

Transfers 

Kristenia Sloss

- MCES Title 1 Paraprofessional beginning October 14, 2019 (Transferring from Early Childhood Parapro Position)

Non-Certified Ashley Knapp

-MCGS Paraprofessional beginning October 22, 2019 (Replacing Megan Alka who resigned)

Amy Price

-MCES Special Ed Paraprofessional beginning October 21, 2019 (Replacing Crystal Dulgar who was hired as Parent Educator/Home Visitor)

Nancy Organ

-MCGS Special Education Paraprofessional beginning October 22, 2019 (New Position)

Dawn McGee

-Part Time Home Visitor/Parent Educator beginning October 22, 2019 (New Position)

All present voted Aye. Motion Carried.

Assistant Coach Stipends 

The Board discussed the possibility of creating a policy on how to determine if an assistant coach was needed or not. The Board directed Dr. Bleyer to come back with a proposal during the November regular board meeting.

Adjournment 

A motion to adjourn was made by Janice Alka and seconded by Peter. All present voted aye. Motion Carried. Meeting adjourned at 8:26 p.m.
