Wabash Community Unit School District #348 Board of Education met Nov. 18.

Here is the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Wabash Community Unit School District #348 met in Regular Session on Monday, November 18, 2019 in the library of Mt. Carmel Elementary School.

President Schuler called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.

Vice President Neil Earnest called the roll. Attending in addition to the vice president were Kyle Peach, Theresa Hocking, Jared Alka, and Tim Schuler. Janice Alka and Ryan Peter were absent.

Also present were Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bleyer, Mt. Carmel High School (MCHS) Principal Jake Newkirk, Mt. Carmel Grade School (MCGS) Principal Chris Taylor, Mt. Carmel Elementary School (MCES) Principal Sheila Odom, Chief of Operations Steve Holt, MCHS Assistant Principal Tyler Buss, Director of Technology – Kevin Smith, Director of Transportation Sharon Thombleson, Kevin Madden –WSJD, Corey Woolsey – Mt. Carmel Register, Betsy Ross –WCTA, Rachel Galatas –MCHS Secretary, Susan Wood –County resident, and District Secretary Kim Zimmer.

Schuler led the pledge to the flag.

Dr. Bleyer noted that the assessment scores had been received. All the District’s schools performed well. The building principals will be reporting in more detail at a future date.

A motion to approve the consent agenda was made by Jared Alka and seconded by Peach. A roll call vote was taken. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. Janice Alka and Ryan Peter were absent.

Reports

Tyler Buss – Vape Sensors

Buss told the Board about the new Halo Smart Sensors that have been installed at the High School. According to the data he had collected to date, vaping in the buildings has decreased.

Move to go to Closed Session

At 7:15 p.m., Hocking moved to enter into Executive Session pursuant to Section 2(c)(1) of the Open Meetings Act: “The appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees.” The motion was seconded by Jared Alka. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. Janice Alka and Ryan Peter were absent.

Open Session

A motion to return to open session was made by Hocking and seconded by Jared Alka. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. Janice Alka and Ryan Peter were absent. The meeting returned to open session at 7:51 p.m.

Closed Minutes Approved

Jared Alka moved to approve the minutes of the closed session as read in closed session. Peach seconded the motion. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried. Janice Alka and Ryan Peter were absent.

New Business

Tax Levy 2019 Payable in 2020

Dr. Bleyer advised that the Tax Levy would be displayed for 30 days.

Activity Buses

A motion to approve the purchase of two (2) Starcraft 2019 activity buses at a cost of no more than $55,090 each was made by Peach and seconded by Jared Alka. A roll call vote was taken. Voting Aye were Jared Alka, Neil Earnest, Kyle Peach, and Tim Schuler. Voting Nay was Theresa Hocking. Janice Alka and Ryan Peter were absent. Motion Carried.

Assistant Coaches Stipends

President Schuler announced that the Board decided to continue to follow the WCTA contract as written in regard to the stipends.

Employment of Personnel

A motion to approve the following employment recommendations was made by Hocking and seconded by Peach.
