Rod Blagojevich, the former governor and convicted felon who recently had his sentence commuted by President Donald Trump, received the punishment he deserved, said one state representative.
Rep. Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis) said Trump’s administration has worked to root out dirty politicians in Illinois. However, the president’s decision to commute Blagojevich’s sentence was a setback for ethics reform in the state.
Blagojevich served as governor from 2003 until he was impeached, removed from office and convicted in 2009.
Blagojevich destroyed the state finances and disgraced the office, Windhorst said.
Windhorst is serving on a panel tasked with reviewing and hearing challenges on the recent appointment of a state representative.
Eva-Dina Delgado was tapped to fill Luis Arroyo’s seat after he stepped down amid an ethics scandal.
“As a member of the qualifications challenge committee, I’ll be reviewing evidence and listening to testimony regarding Rep. Delgado’s recent appointment,” Windhorst said. “The public needs to have confidence that the appointment of the new representative was conducted appropriately and according to the law.”
Delgado’s appointment is being challenged by House Republican Leader Jim Durkin and House Democrat Anne Stava-Murray.
