The Shawnee National Forest has reopened some campgrounds and restrooms after being shuttered during the state’s stay-at-home order.
"We are excited to get visitors back onto the forest recreating; however, we would remind visitors to continue to follow CDC health and safety guidelines and practice good social distancing while recreating on your Shawnee National Forest" acting Forest Supervisor Robert West told the Du Quoin Call.
Among the area facilities to have reopened are Johnson Creek Campground, Pine Hills Campground, Camp Cadiz Campground, Hardin County, Pharaoh Campground, Little Grand Canyon, Lincoln Memorial Park and Rim Rock.
In choosing a site, visitors are asked to stay as local as they can and to pack out everything they bring in. In addition, everyone is asked to adhere to the precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Residents are encouraged to visit the Shawnee National Forest website or on Facebook.
