Mt Carmel FD responds to 28 fires in 2018

Mt Carmel Fire District responded to 74 calls in 2018 - 23.3 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Mt Carmel included 28 fires - 14 structure fires, seven vehicle fires and seven other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $2,039,850 in fire loss - or about $72,852 per fire.

The department also received 45 false calls, including one malicious call and 44 other false calls.

The Mount Carmel Firefighters Pension Fund, which has four active employees and three retired or inactive employees, was $47,616 in debt as of April 2017, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $1,831 for every fire in 2017.
