City of Carmi City Council met Nov. 5.

The Carmi City Council met at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Room of the Municipal Building, 225 East Main Street for a special meeting.
Prior to opening the council meeting, Mayor Pollard asked Alderman Winkleman to give the invocation followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mayor Pollard presided with the following Aldermen present: Steve Winkleman, Tracy Nelson, James Totten, Sheila Jo Headlee, Jeremy Courson, Mike Knight, and Doug Hays. Absent: Mark Blake
Mayor Pollard stated this special meeting was called in order to pass the ordinance to set the salaries of the elected officials who take office on May 4, 2021. Mayor Pollard stated in order for salaries to go into effect, an ordinance setting them had to be passed even though they were approved at last meeting. Alderman Headlee made a motion to approve ordinance #1567, an ordinance to set the salary of the City of Carmi Illinois officers to be elected at the next municipal election to be held on April 6, 2021 (going into effect on May 4, 2021 for the newly elected officers) and defining the duties of the City Clerk. The motion was seconded by Alderman Hays. The motion carried on roll call by each Aldermen present answering “yes.”

At 5:32 p.m. Alderman Headlee made a motion to adjourn. The motion was seconded by Alderman Courson. The motion carried on roll call by each Alderman present answering “yes.”
After the meeting had adjourned, the pastor from Harrisburg Medical Center asked to speak. He stated a couple of years ago, his organization had attempted to pass out bibles on the sidewalk at the high school but was asked to leave by the local police. He asked what the proper procedure was to be able to do this. Chief of Police Jason Carter stated the organization would need to contact the school and let them know what they were planning. Chief Carter stated they were asked to leave last time as several students made complaints to the principal and there had been a verbal exchange of words between the police and the person in charge that day. Chief Carter also stated as long as they were on the sidewalk with no verbal disputes, there would not be a problem.
