Republican state Sen. Darren Bailey (R-Xenia) recently served as the headline speaker for the annual Lincoln Day Dinner hosted by Edwards County Republicans.
Bailey, who recently launched his campaign challenging Gov. J.B. Pritzker, was joined at the podium by Rep. Adam Niemerg (R-Teutopolis) on Feb. 26.
Speaking before a nearly capacity-filled crowd at the Country Financial Hall, Bailey briefly recapped the seven-city, two-day long, whirlwind tour of the Northern Illinois area he has embarked on since making his run official, The Navigator reported.
He said the attendance at his rallies exceeded the expectations of many who claimed to know the area best.
“We went to Marion, and then Highland and Bloomington, and then Utica, Loves Park and Shorewood,” he said, The Navigator reported. “It’s interesting because the naysayers and the political elites said, ‘Well, just wait until Bailey gets to [the] north of I-80, and we’ll see what kind of support these people have [for him] up there.'”
Bailey said his campaign would be about taking the state back from what he calls “the political elites,” whom he charges have largely turned their backs on everyday voters.
