State Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) is urging fans to make their voice heard in the debate over bigger crowds being allowed at high school sporting events by signing off on a petition being supported by Illinois House Republicans.
“It is time to let the fans into extracurricular activities where it is safe,” Severin posted on Facebook. “Sign the petition.”
Even as COVID-19 infection rates have dropped and the number of people receiving the vaccination has ticked up, Gov. J.B. Pritzker has been slow to raise the permitted crowd size past 50 individuals.
“The restrictions are causing problems for participants, athletes, cheerleaders, fans, and school officials,” House Republicans said on their website. “We believe that grade school, junior high, and high school extracurricular events should be allowed to have attendance at 25% capacity going forward. Officials from the Illinois High School Association, the Illinois Association of School Boards, the Illinois Association of School Administrators, Illinois Association of Athletic Directors, and Illinois Principals Association as well as local school board officials, parents, coaches, players, and school administrators from across the state agree.”
