Illinois state representatives are pushing for the governor to end extra unemployment payments to help push people back into the workforce.
Reps. Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) and Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) are calling on Gov. J.B. Prizker and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) to follow the lead of 25 other states that have ended the unemployment distinction of $300 per week in benefits.
"It is time to get back to normal and get back to work. Businesses need good employees to help move our economy in the right direction for families," Niemerg wrote in a Facebook post.
According to the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program, the extra relief funds per week will end on Sept. 4, Niemerg's website reported, but many believe this should end now as states reopen and the world begins a return to normal.
At least 15 other state governors have pledged to end the extra compensation in unemployment funds weekly, Neimerg's press release stated.
Neimerg's press release states that as of May 15, 422,093 people are still collecting unemployment benefits throughout Illinois, despite the numerous jobs available. Neimerg believes it is time for Illinoisans to go back to work and for the governor to end the extra funding.
