Wabash Community Unit School District #348 Board of Education met Sept. 20.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The Board of Education of Wabash Community Unit School District #348, Wabash County, met in Regular Session in the Cafetorium of Mt. Carmel Grade School.

Secretary Janice Alka called the roll. In addition to the secretary, those present were Tim Schuler, Neil Earnest, Kyle Peach, Theresa Hocking, Ryan Peter, and Susan Wood.

Also present were Superintendent Dr. Chuck Bleyer, MCJSH Principal Andrew Shelby, MCGS Principal Brianne Foster, MCES Principal Jake Newkirk, MCHS Assistant Principal Tyler Buss, MCJHS COO Steve Holt, District Treasurer Darlene Underwood, Betsy Ross – WCTA, Kevin Madden –WSJD, Maggee Bleyer –Prairie Post, Nicole Loudermilk, Jessica Peter, Danielle Ewald, Bev Hall, Rachel Martin, Jennifer Beesley, Gayle Kieffer, Jamie McCorkle, and District Secretary Kim Zimmer.

Susie Wood asked to have the August 16, 2021 minutes revised prior to approving consent agenda. A motion to approve the consent agenda with the revision to the minutes was made by Wood and seconded by Peach. A roll call vote was taken. All present voted AYE. Motion Carried.

Reports – MCJSH Principal Andrew Shelby ZAP Program

Mr. Shelby spoke to the board regarding a new program at the Jr/Sr High School called ZAP (Zeros Aren’t Permitted). This program helps students boost their GPA by assisting them with their work over the lunch hours. Students are responding well to this program and seeing success in raising their GPA’s. Parental involvement has also increased as a result of this program implementation.

Public Comments

President Schuler asked if anyone wanted to comment on any item on the agenda. Several people spoke up in regard to testing of athletes prior to games. Dr. Bleyer explained that the Administration and Athletic Department along with guidance from the Wabash County Health Department would write a policy that would cover testing of athletes and parental notification. This policy will be presented to the board for approval.

New Business

2021-2022 Proposed Budget

A motion to approve the 2021-2022 budget as presented was made by Wood and seconded by Peter. A roll call vote was taken. All present voted AYE. Motion Carried.

Renovation of Riverview Stadium Seating Complex

Dr. Bleyer said a renovation of Riverview Stadium was being considered. He told the board he would present a plan during the October meeting. The renovation would be funded by the 1% sales tax and grant monies.

Surplus Bus Bids

The bids for surplus buses were presented to the board. The highest bidder was Johnson Truck Sales for a price of $3,156.00 for all three buses. A motion to approve the Johnson Truck Sales bid was made by Alka and seconded by Earnest. Al present voted AYE. Motion Carried.

Sub Pay Increase

Dr. Bleyer recommended increasing the sub pay to $12.00/hr. A motion to approve the recommendation was made by Hocking and seconded by Earnest. A roll call vote was taken. All present voted AYE. Motion Carried.

Employment of Personnel

A motion to approve the following employment recommendations was made by Peach and seconded by Alka. All present voted Aye. Motion Carried.

Bonnie Keepes -MCHS Volunteer Volleyball Coach starting August 30, 2021 Susie Wood said a public speaking item should be placed on the board meeting agendas.

A motion to adjourn was made by Alka and seconded by Earnest. All present voted aye. Motion Carried. Meeting adjourned at 7:48 p.m.
