Republican state Rep. Dave Severin is offering sympathy and giving praise to Wayne County law enforcement after the recent shooting death of Deputy Sean Riley.
“I was saddened to learn of the passing of Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Sean Riley who was killed in the line of duty,” Severin said in a statement posted to Facebook soon after Riley’s death was made public. “Penny and I offer our most sincere condolences to Deputy Riley's family and loved ones and are grateful to all the men and women of our law enforcement community for their service and sacrifice."
Illinois State Police said Riley was killed while responding to a motorist assist call on 1-64 on the morning of Dec. 29. Reports indicate that after a brief scuffle, Riley requested emergency assistance, but responding officers arrived to find him down and his cruiser missing, 14News reported.
Suspect Ray Tate was taken into custody following the death of Riley and the carjacking of a semi trailer. He forced the truck driver to go to a gas station in St. Peter’s Missouri. A series of incidents occurred there and Tate traveled back to Illinois in another stolen vehicle, with a kidnapped victim, according to an ISP release.
Tate was charged in Wayne County court, 14News reported, where he appeared via video. He was appointed legal counsel and his next hearing is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2022 at 1 p.m.
A drive through benefit will be held on Jan. 8 starting at 11 a.m. for Riley’s family at the Cisne Bedford Township Fire Department.
