The city of Mount Carmel has been asking for an overpass for years to deal with issues like a recent train derailment.

“The city would want nothing better than to have an overpass," said Joe Judge, mayor of Mount Carmel.

According to 14 News, a train derailed in Mount Carmel on June 22. The train blocked two different crossings, on Walnut street and 2nd street for an extended period of time. No traffic was allowed underneath the bridge where the train was because the cars were considered unstable and could fall at any point. The situation was monitored and policed by city officers.

At a June 27 meeting, members of city council said that they have been trying to get funding for an overpass to deal with situations like the derailment for several years now, but are unable to make  progress with the project as it is a state road and under Illinois Department of Transportation’s jurisdiction.

Mayor Judge is encouraging residents to contact their state or regional representatives and ask for an overpass.
