Gun rights have been a divisive issue in America in recent years as the country deals with a high number of publicized mass shootings, but Republicans contend that Democratic-run Illinois has stepped over the line with its latest gun control legislation.
“Democrats in Illinois have taken their quest to pass unconstitutional gun control legislation to the next level tonight, as Gov. (J.B.) Pritzker has signed a bill that will make law-abiding citizens into felons for failing to comply with government managed gun registry,” state Rep. Dave Severin (R-Benton) said on Facebook last week after the legislation was signed.
The "Protect Illinois Community Act," or the amended House Bill 5471, defines high-capacity magazines as those for rifles that hold more than 10 rounds and those for handguns that hold more than 15 rounds.
ABC7 reported that Pritzker signed the bill on Tuesday, and it was to go into effect immediately after it was signed. It bans “assault weapons,” high-capacity magazines and rapid-fire devices that include what are commonly called bump stocks.
Severin expects legal challenges to the legislation.
“The Illinois State Rifle Association has pledged to sue the State of Illinois for passing this bill to stop it from being implemented,” he said in his posting. “I support their planned court challenge and will continue to advocate for the Second Amendment Rights of the people of the state of Illinois and the United States of America.”
Severin was first elected to the Illinois House in 2017. His legislative experience includes serving on the Judiciary - Criminal, and Mental Health & Addiction committees. Severin resides in Benton.
