SIC BOARD FREEZES TUITION AGAIN
The Southeastern Illinois College Board of Trustees met Jan. 17, at 6 p.m. in the Rodney J. Brenner Board Room on the main campus in Harrisburg.
The board voted to freeze tuition for the 2023-24 academic year, only adding a $1 fee for facilities and $1 fee for technology. Tuition has remained at $106 per credit hour for most of the last decade.
“The board is pleased to once again freeze tuition for our students as we keep quality higher education affordable,” said Dr. Frank Barbre, Board Vice Chair and ICCTA Representative.
SIC President Dr. Jonah Rice added, “SIC is the most affordable option for our region, especially with our free book rental.”
The board also approved the Intergovernmental Joint Agreement Between Rend Lake College and SIC.
“This agreement simplifies many of the processes between the two colleges, further strengthening our alliance,” said SIC Vice President Dr. Karen Weiss.
Regarding enrollment, the board learned that all signs point to continued growth following the dip in enrollment during COVID.
“Recruiting efforts, partnerships, and new programs continue to pay off,” explained Rice. “It’s a total team effort.”
The board also discussed a $1.65 million state appropriation that could not be used this year for career and technical education. Administrators have been assured by officials that the funds will come to fruition in fiscal year 2024 to support local business and industry workforce and training needs.
“It’s vital that we receive these funds,” said Rice. “While we had hoped they would come through this year, we are excited that we’ve been promised they will be there for us in FY 24.”
The board approved the 2025-26 academic calendar, as well as multiple minor policy revisions such as the college logo and seal updates and mandatory safety training.
In personnel, the board hired full-time cosmetology instructor Audra Damron and approved a position for a visual and performing arts specialist.
The next meeting of the board will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 6 p.m. in the Rodney J. Brenner Board Room on the Harrisburg campus.
