Rep. Patrick Windhorst recently participated in an event to help people safely dispose of their prescription medication in Metropolis.

"Senator Dale Fowler (R-Harrisburg) and I had a great drug takeback event today in Metropolis. Thank you to the Metropolis Police Department and the Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition for making it a success!" he wrote in Facebook post.

Windhorst also thanked the Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition and the Metropolis Police Department for their participation and support for the successful event.

Windhorst, who resides in Metropolis, was first elected to the Illinois House in 2018 and serves on the Restorative Justice, and Judiciary – Criminal committees, according to the Illinois House.

In a press release announcing the event, Fowler (R-Harrisburg) said the event was a way for residents to discard old medicines while keeping the water supply from being contaminated.

“It’s incredibly important to properly dispose of your unwanted or expired medications,” said Fowler. “By doing this, trained professionals can properly dispose of this medication so it’s not a hazard for the future. I am proud to partner with Rep. Windhorst and the Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition for this event.”

The Metropolis Drug Take Back event occurred on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a national effort that aims to "dispose of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications, the DOJ website says.

WSIL-TV reported on the Metropolis event. The report said: "The program encourages residents to bring unwanted or unused prescriptions to police so that they can safely dispose of them. These pictures were taken at the event in Metropolis, that's where State Rep. Patrick Windhorst and State Sen. Dale Fowler were today, lending a hand with boxes full of prescription drugs. Metropolis Police and Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition also helped."
