Community Unit School District #201 Board of Education met Sept. 12.

CALL TO ORDER
On September 12, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. President Adina Hoover called to order the regular meeting of the Community Unit School District 201 Board of Education.
Roll Call
Members present: Adina Hoover, Whitney Rogers, Kevin Marren, Angela Steketee, Leah Conover, Carlos Hevia, Jessica Radogno
Also present: Superintendent Jack Baldermann; Business Manager Anthony Ruelli; and the Superintendent’s Administrative Assistant, Shannon Cossairt.
Pledge of Allegiance
President Hoover led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.
CLOSED SESSION
Motion by Mr. Hevia, second by Ms. Conover, to enter closed session to discuss personnel issues and student discipline.
Ayes: Steketee, Radogno, Hevia, Conover, Marren, Rogers, Hoover
Nays: None.
Motion Carried.
The Board moved to closed session at 6:01 p.m.
The Board returned to open session at 6:52 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES August 22, 2023
Motion by Ms. Conover, second by Mr. Marren, to approve the minutes of the August 22, 2023 regular meeting of the Board of Education, as amended.
Ayes: Steketee, Radogno, Hevia, Conover, Marren, Rogers, Hoover
Nays: None.

August 22, 2023 Closed Session
Motion by Ms. Steketee, second by Mr. Marren, to approve the minutes of the closed session of the August 22, 2023, regular meeting of the Board of Education, as amended.

INFORMATION/DISCUSSION
HVAC Update
Joe Smith, Facilities Director, reviewed the HVAC project that took place at Westmont Junior High School this summer. Mr. Smith shared videos of the project at its different points over the summer: before, during and after. At this time the chiller that was delayed has been placed on the roof and they will be running tests on it over the next couple of weeks. Representatives from Carrier, Cashman Stahler, and Helm Mechanical were available and answered questions from the Board regarding the project and timeline of events.

Dr. Carla Braun, Director of Continuous School Improvement and Professional Learning, gave a presentation on the events and training that took place over the summer. Her presentation included the following:

Dr. Braun highlighted the activity that took place by staff, students and administration, and how hard everyone worked this summer. Mr. Anthony Ruelli, CSBO, gave some highlights from the in-person registration that took place.
Crisis Plan
Each year Administration meets with the Westmont Police and Fire Departments to discuss emergency drills from the previous year and to review what can be improved. Through these conversations a crisis plan for the District is created. This plan is made available to the Board, but is not available to the public to maintain security.
Enrollment
The current enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year is available in BoardDocs for Review.
Mental Health and Community Based Services
Later in the meeting the Board will be voting to hire Kate Moon to continue to work with our high school students. Ms. Moon has worked at the high school for the past several years.

Approval of Joining Education Benefit Cooperative
Motion by Ms. Radogno, second by Ms. Steketee, to approve the acceptance of the contract and by-laws document of the Educational Benefit Cooperative and authorizing membership in the EBC, as presented.

Approval of Mental Health and Community Based Services
Motion by Ms. Conover, second by Mr. Marren, to approve Kate Moon for mental health and community-based services, as presented.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Communications
Superintendent Baldermann shared how he is enjoying getting to go to all the buildings and how proud he is of the student behavior as we start the year. He enjoys seeing all the teachers in action. He also shared how US News and World Reports has published the school ratings, and Westmont is #14.

BOARD REPORTS
Mr. Marren would like to thank Mr. Landreth, WHS Teacher, for coordinating a successful Geography Club field trip downtown.
Mr. Hevia would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in Hoopfest.
Ms. Conover shared how the Board is continuing to look at its operating procedure.
Ms. Steketee would like to remind junior high parents of the PTO meeting taking place. She also would like to thank Anna Vasylieva and Edith Courington for the changes being made to promote the District. She would also like to let everyone know that Westmont will be hosting the Illinois Reads Conference on February 3, 2024.
