With winter just around the corner, homeowners in Illinois need to start preparing their homes for the cold weather. The state experiences all four seasons, and being proactive can help avoid costly damages and unwanted challenges. Water damage, including frozen and burst pipes, is a major concern during the winter months. Taking simple steps like wrapping pipes and maintaining a temperature of 65 degrees or higher can prevent such issues. It's also important to know the location of the water shutoff valve in case of emergencies.

According to Consumer Reports, Bankrate, realsimple.com, and Budget Dumpster, here are some tips to help homeowners get their houses ready for winter in Illinois:

1. Protect indoor pipes, especially in basements, where one-third of all burst pipes occur.

2. Insulate the attic or crawl space.

3. Service the furnace and chimney with annual inspections.

4. Remove and store window screens, and install glass storm windows for added insulation.

5. Repair loose roofing shingles to prevent water leaks from melting snow.

6. Clean and inspect gutters to avoid ice dams.

7. Repair loose or broken patio stones.

8. Remove any dead or ailing tree limbs that could fall and cause damage.

9. Secure outdoor water sources and drain garden hoses before the first frost.

10. Mark garden beds, paths, and driveways to assist with snow shoveling.

11. Re-caulk windows and doors to seal any gaps.

12. Reverse ceiling fans to circulate warm air.

13. Drain fuel from gas-powered engines, such as lawn mowers.

14. Check on insurance coverage to ensure adequate protection.

15. Prevent door locks from freezing by using a powered-graphite lubricant.

16. Tidy up gardens to prevent insects from hiding.

17. Mulch flower beds for added protection.

18. Keep the deck clean and apply sealer if needed.

19. Check the snowblower to ensure it is in working order.

20. Bring in outdoor plants, furniture, and grills to protect them from the cold.

21. Cover the water heater with an insulation blanket.

22. Install a programmable thermostat for customized temperature settings.

23. Change batteries and test smoke detectors for safety.

Preparing for winter may seem overwhelming, but by following these tips, homeowners can protect their homes and avoid unnecessary expenses. Remember, taking the time to prepare now can save you time, money, and stress in the long run. Stay warm and safe this winter season!
