State Senator Dale Fowler recently hosted the annual Student Advisory Council, providing an educational opportunity for students to engage in the legislative process and learn about state government. Over 60 students from 16 high schools gathered at Southern Illinois University Carbondale to participate in the event.

During the council, Senator Fowler emphasized the importance of understanding the legislative process and how it impacts everyday lives. He stated, "State government impacts our everyday lives and it’s important students understand the process and how a bill becomes a law."

The students had the opportunity to interact with like-minded peers and learn about public policy and lawmaking. Daniel Tsung, a student from Carbondale Community High School, expressed his excitement about the experience, saying, "It was a fantastic experience. I got to meet with so many likeminded kids my age who are willing to get in there hands-on and learn about these topics and the scene of public policy and lawmaking."

The event featured guest speakers, including Lead Pastor TW Norman, Jeffrey Isbell of Meridian Health Care, SIU Chancellor Austin Lane, SIU Foundation CEO Matt Kupec, and SIU Dawg Pound President Dylan Chambers. These speakers provided valuable insights and perspectives on various topics.

One of the highlights of the council was the opportunity for students to present their own legislative ideas. Hunter Gunderson from Hardin County High School shared his enthusiasm, stating, "My favorite part was being able to do the bill presentations and being able to present ideas that were important to us instead of ones that were assigned. It is important to stay involved and connected and learn about how our government works."

The students' ideas varied, ranging from education-related proposals to funding needs. Senator Fowler commended the students for their creativity and collaboration, saying, "We had some amazing ideas come from the students today. Some were education related, some were funding needs based, but the takeaway for me was… they are brainstorming and working together to find solutions to improve the state of Illinois."

In the spring, these students will have the opportunity to visit the Capitol, where they will be assigned legislative roles and engage in debates about the bills they created. Senator Fowler expressed his excitement for the upcoming session, stating, "I cannot wait to see what they do with their legislation when they come see me during Spring session."

The Student Advisory Council organized by Senator Fowler provides a unique platform for students to actively participate in the legislative process and gain a deeper understanding of state government. Through this initiative, young minds are empowered to contribute to the betterment of their communities and the state as a whole.
