State Senator Dale Fowler and members of the Illinois Children’s Health Caucus convened on February 7, 2024, for their first meeting of the year. The gathering took place at the Stratton Building, located adjacent to the Illinois Capitol.

The bipartisan group, consisting of four lawmakers, focused on the pressing issue of children in the Illinois Medicaid program. With over one million children relying on the state’s Medicaid program, it is crucial to address their healthcare needs effectively.

During the meeting, a panel of experts provided insights and knowledge on the topic of "Children in the IL Medicaid Program 101." Among the speakers was Susan Hayes Gordon, Senior Vice President and Chief External Affairs Officer at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. She emphasized the significance of the Medicaid program in supporting the healthcare needs of children in low-income families and those with special healthcare requirements.

Stephanie Altman, Director of Healthcare Justice and Senior Director of Policy at the Shriver Center on Poverty Law, also shared her expertise at the meeting. Altman highlighted the importance of ensuring healthcare justice for all children, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds.

Additionally, Diana Merdian, representing the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, provided a parent's perspective on the challenges and concerns faced by families relying on the Medicaid program. Merdian's insights shed light on the real-life impact of the program on families across the state.

Senator Fowler, recognizing the vital role of Medicaid, expressed his support for the program. He acknowledged how Medicaid serves as a lifeline for children in low-income families and those with special healthcare needs.
