Galatia Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met Dec. 19.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Galatia Community Unit School District No. 1 Board was held in the boardroom at the Annex. Roll call was taken, and those present were Tim Pribble, Elaine Jackson, Bryan McCabe, Holly Murphy, Amy Richey, and Leslie Ferrell. B.J. Pigg was absent. Six (6) members present and one (1) member absent. Board President, Tim Pribble, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Also present: Superintendent, Shain Crank, HS Principal, Ashley Launius, and Recording Secretary, Michele Hankins.

President Pribble led the Board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

VISITORS:

There were no visitors.

ADDITIONS/DELETIONS TO AGENDA:

There were no additions/deletions to the agenda.

EXECUTIVE SESSION:

There was no executive session meeting.

PRINCIPAL REPORT:

Brain Games: The 7th/8th grade team placed 4th and will move on to the sectional competition at Rend Lake College in the spring.

FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): FAFSA night for Seniors will be in January.

PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports): There will be a PBIS day at the JH/HS on December 20, 2023.

Mrs. Launius left the meeting at 7:05 p.m.

Mr. B.J. Pigg entered the meeting at 7:06 p.m.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT:

Portable Buildings: Mr. Crank called JMO Portable Buildings in Johnson City to price portable buildings. A two room building with bathrooms, delivered and set up is approximately $200,000. To lease a building would cost around $25,000 a year with some set up fees. Mr. Crank will get a hold of H.E. Mitchell to get a quote on replacing the roof on the elementary portable building.

New Building: Mr. Crank spoke with Mike Ewald, district architect, about the price of a new building. This was a very preliminary discussion.

Teledoc: Ferrell Hospital has reached out and we are working on a mutual time to meet.

FCS Teacher (Family Consumer Science): Sarah Heater was officially licensed as a teacher on December 18th, 2023.

HS Stage Curtains: The cost of the curtains will be approximately $11,000-$15,000. New measurements will be taken for a more accurate cost.

Energy Transition Community Grant: The approval for the grant is close to being complete. The total project for the grant includes baseball lighting replacement, new softball field lighting, 26,000 sf of concrete parking lot and driveway improvements, 560 If of 5' wide sidewalk improvements, and one new batting cage. The total cost of the project is $989,555.34. The projects will be paid with the Energy Transition Community Grant of $597,515.00 and the remaining balance of $392,040.34 will be with state/local funds.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRANSPORTATION:

Bus #14: New injectors will be installed and a recall fix. The bus is at Gateway Industrial Power, Inc. Mt. Vernon, Il for repair.

Bus #16: Our new bus went into service on the 14th of December.

ATHLETICS:

JH Girls Basketball: 8th grade night was December 13th. We recognized 8th graders Maggie Quartana and River Serles. The Little GEC Tournament starts on January 2, 2024, at Pope County. Regionals start January 9th at New Simpson Hill.

JH Boys Basketball: 8th grade night was December 18th. We recognized 8th graders: Kamdyn Wood, Isiah Plumlee, Ethan McDonald, Kale Stricklin, Elijah Turner, Cash Carlton, Cayden Baird, Mason Heater, and Jaxon Hall. 8th grade cheerleaders Kaleyiah Townsend and Brylea Wellen. JH Boys Basketball varsity record is 14-5 and JV is 10-5. The Little GEC tournament is at Pope County starting January 16th and regionals will start January 22nd

HS Girls Basketball: The girls started their season with a second place consolation finish at the Meridian Tournament. They won the Christmas Round Robin Tournament on December 16th at Hardin County.

HS Boys Basketball: The boys started their season with a 3rd place finish at the Elverado Thanksgiving Tournament. They played in the CCA Holiday Tournament on December 15th and 16th and finished with a 2-1 record.

JH Volleyball: Tryouts were held on December 16th, 2023.

Athletic Director: Jimmy Foster is doing a great job and is currently scheduling referees/umpires for the next two years.

OLD BUSINESS:

Solar Project

There was no update for the solar project.

APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA:

1. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve the tax levy hearing and the regular meeting minutes of November 2, 2023. Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pigg-aye, and McCabe-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

2. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Murphy to approve the bills and payroll as presented with the additional invoice from H.E. Mitchell, $58,875.08. Pigg-aye, Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Jackson-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

3. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to approve the treasurer's report and co-mingled account as presented. McCabe-aye, Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, Pigg-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

NEW BUSINESS:

Family Consumer Science Teacher

4. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Pigg to employ Sarah Heater as the family consumer science teacher for the remainder of the 2023/2024 school year. Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

Seniority Report

5. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by McCabe to approve the 2023/2024 seniority report. Ferrell- aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pigg-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

2nd Press Policy Reading

6. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to approve the second reading of Press Policy draft updates of 2:20; 2:80; 2:120; 2:150; 2:200; 2:220; 2:250, 2:220-E2; 2:220-E6; 4:10; 4:30; 4:60; 4:130; 4:160; 4:130-E; 5:30; 5:190; 5:200; 5:120; 5:220; 5:250; 5:330; 6:15; 6:30; 6:50; 6:60; 6:130; 6:210; 6:230; 7:60; 7:70; 7:160; 7:190; 7:270; 7:285; 7:290; 8:25; 8:30, review and monitoring 3:80-E; 3:10; 4:40; 4:55; 5:170; 5:285; 6:10; 6:190; 6:240; 6:270; 7:275; 7:330; 7:10-E; 8:70; 8:95, and draft update rewritten 3:40-E. Stage Curtains

7. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by Richey to purchase gray high school stage curtains from Northeast Stage, with a cost not to exceed $15,000. The purchase will be made from the sales tax fund. Pribble-aye, Pigg-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

Ballfield Lighting/Concrete Work/Batting Cage:

8. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve the construction management contract with H.E. Mitchell and Remedy for $989,555.34, pending final grant approval. The Energy Transition Community Grant total of $597,515 and State/Local funds of $392,040.34 will pay for the project. Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

Referee/Umpire Pay

To stay competitive with the surrounding area schools, all referee/umpires will be paid $75.00 a game.

9. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to increase all Galatia athletic referee/umpire game fees to $75.00 a game starting in January 2024. Pigg-aye, McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Ferrell-aye, and Pribble-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

Substitute Teacher Pay

To stay competitive with the surrounding area schools and the minimum wage law, substitute teacher pay will be increased to $100 a day.

10. A motion was made by Jackson and seconded by McCabe to increase the substitute teacher pay to $100 a day starting in January 2024. Richey-aye, Pigg-aye, Ferrell-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Seven (7) ayes, motion carried.

Minimum Wage Pay

Minimum wage increase will be $14.00/hr. starting January 1st, 2024.

11. A motion was made by Jackson and seconded by Richey to adjourn at 7:50 p.m. Ferrell-aye, Jackson-aye,
