State Representative Patrick Windhorst (R-Metropolis) recently hosted the House Republicans’ Annual Emerging Women Leaders Conference at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, where he welcomed two influential women leaders from Southern Illinois. Among the attendees were Kristy Stephenson, Dean of Career and Technology Programs for Shawnee Community College, and Deborah Barnett, Executive Director of Southern Illinois Now (SI Now).
Windhorst praised Stephenson for her contributions, stating, “Kristy Stephenson is a very talented attorney and a dedicated public servant. Shawnee College is blessed to have her lend her talent to the school.” Stephenson, in turn, expressed her gratitude to Windhorst for the opportunity, saying, “It is always energizing and inspiring to engage with women leaders from across the State of Illinois.”
Regarding Barnett, Windhorst highlighted her impact on regional economic growth and development through SI Now, noting, “A big part of SI Now’s success has been the hard work, abilities, and leadership of Deborah Barnett.” Barnett, appreciative of the invitation, stated, “Serving the Southern Illinois region is in my DNA, so to have the opportunity to advance the region through SI Now and draw attention to our southernmost counties at the Emerging Women Leaders event was truly an honor.”
The conference featured various activities, including a keynote address by Springfield Mayor Misty Buscher, a Listening Session with Leader McCombie, and a panel discussion titled “Own Your Power,” which included distinguished speakers such as Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lisa Holder White and Susan Hayes Gordon of the Ann & Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.
House Republican legislators from across Illinois invited guests from their districts to participate in the event, showcasing the diverse experiences and industries within the state. The day also offered panels on law enforcement, economics, and more, as well as tours of the Capitol with Architect of the Capitol Andrea Aggertt.
The event aimed to empower and inspire women leaders throughout the state, fostering connections and highlighting the achievements of women in various sectors.
