State Representative Patrick Windhorst, the House Republican Floor Leader, is currently spearheading the House Republicans' "Truth in Public Safety" working group. This initiative comes amidst criticisms of the SAFE-T Act, a controversial criminal justice reform law signed by Democrats and Governor JB Pritzker. Windhorst, along with other House Republicans, presented a legislative package focused on enhancing public safety, supporting law enforcement, and aiding victims of violent crime.

At a recent Capitol press conference, Rep. Windhorst emphasized the group's dedication to addressing public safety concerns. He stated, "The bills we are highlighting today will improve public safety, hold criminals accountable, and provide needed support to our police officers and law enforcement."

Since its establishment in 2023, the Truth in Public Safety Working group has collaborated with various stakeholders to develop a comprehensive legislative agenda. Windhorst highlighted the group's proactive approach, noting, "This legislative package focuses on supporting and protecting crime victims, giving judges wider discretion to detain people charged with felonies, and recruiting and retaining law enforcement while ensuring they are able to do their jobs."

Among the key legislation introduced by House Republicans in the working group are measures such as widening the detention net for all felonies, revoking pre-trial release for defendants charged with new offenses, and establishing processes to provide mental health services to individuals found unfit to stand trial.

In a call for bipartisan cooperation, Rep. Windhorst expressed readiness to collaborate with Democrat lawmakers, stating, "We do not have to accept the status quo of rising crime, violence in our communities, and the loss of our police officers. We can get to work together today to make important changes to protect our communities, stop crime, and save lives."

The House Republican Public Safety Working Group, under the leadership of Rep. Windhorst, aims to address critical public safety issues and enhance the overall safety and well-being of communities in Illinois.
