Galatia Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met March 26.

Here is the agenda provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Galatia Community Unit School District No. 1 Board was held in the boardroom at the Annex. Roll call was taken, and those present were Tim Pribble, Bryan McCabe, B.J. Pigg, Holly Murphy, and Amy Richey. Elaine Jackson, B.J. Pigg, and Leslie Ferrell were absent. Four (4) members present and Three (3) members absent. Board President, Tim Pribble, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Also present: Superintendent, Shain Crank, HS Principal, Ashley Launius, and Recording Secretary, Michele Hankins.

President Pribble led the Board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Elaine Jackson entered the meeting at 7:04 p.m.

VISITORS:

Luke Piasecki and Amanda Alford, IEC VP Projects discussed with the board the solar power program and answered questions. It will be zero cost for the equipment and installation of the solar panels. There is a 25 year warranty on panels. Depending on the location of the solar panels the savings would be between $318,000- 450,000 for twenty-five years. At the end of the twenty-five years if the school decides not to continue with solar panels they will remove them at no cost.

Mr. Piasecki and Ms. Alford left the meeting at 7:23 p.m.

ADDITIONS/DELETIONS TO AGENDA:

There were no additions/deletions to the agenda.

EXECUTIVE SESSION:

1. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to enter Executive Session at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity; matters of student discipline or review executive session minutes. McCabe-aye, Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

2. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Jackson to end Executive Session at 8:45 p.m. Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

3. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve the Executive Session minutes. Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Priority Staffing

4. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to not continue the Priority Staffing contract. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Coaches

5. A motion was made by Jackson and seconded by Murphy to release all FY23/24 coaches after their season has finished and advertise coaches for the school year FY24/25. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Junior High Science/ELA Teacher

6. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by Jackson to post a junior high teaching position. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

School Bus Driver

7. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to employ Crystal Holbrook as a route school bus driver pending license. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Guidance Counselor

8. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to employ Amy Weaver as guidance counselor for the FY24/25 school year, per salary schedule and pending background check. McCabe-aye, Murphy- aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Art Teacher

9. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to re-employ Dalton Brown as the district art teacher for the FY24/25 school year. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe- aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Elem P.E. Teacher

10. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to re-employ Layton Reinwald as the elementary physical education teacher for the FY24/25 school year. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Family Consumer Science Teacher

11. A motion was made by Jackson and seconded by Pribble to re-employ Sarah Heater as the family consumer science teacher for the FY24/25 school year. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy- aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

High School P.E. Teacher

12. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to re-employ Alex Rapp as the high school physical education teacher for the FY24/25 school year. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy- aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Pay Increase

13. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to increase the bookkeeper's hourly rate $1.50/hr. Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, Pigg-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

PRINCIPAL REPORT:

Job Fair: On March 8th, 2024, all the Juniors and most of the Seniors attended the Saline County Job Fair. Our students were the best dressed and most professional students there. They represented Galatia High School very well.

State Testing: The state testing has been completed for both buildings.

ACES: Wyatt Arnold placed first in Physics at the ACES sectional at SIU. He will advance to the state competition in April. Congratulations Wyatt!

Beauty and the Beast: The JH/HS play was held March 22-23 and was a great success.

High School Prom: Prom will be held on April 13th at the High School gym.

FFA Banquet: The banquet will be held on April 15th.

Brain Games: The JH Brain Games team has advanced to the next round of competition on April 17th. One of the top six high school teams could not attend and our high school team was 7th place and will get to compete as well.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT:

Energy Transition Grant: Mr. Crank applied for the energy transition grant again this year. Hopefully in April we will find out how much the award will be.

Update of Building Projects:

Ballfield Lighting: Engineering has been completed for the light poles

Weight Room/Concession Stand: The HVAC should be completed by the 1st of June.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

ATHLETICS:

JH Boys Basketball: Congratulations to Isiah Plumlee, Kamdyn Wood, and Ryne Foster for being selected for the Southern Illinois Premier All Star Game that was played on March 16-17 at Rend Lake College.

HS Girls Basketball: Congratulations to Riley Ridgeway and Emma Ridgeway for being chosen to the All- Conference Team.

HS Boys Basketball: The boys had a successful season going 21-12 on Varsity and 13-6 on Junior Varsity. Congratulations Eli Hankins for being chosen to the 1st All-Conference Team. Congratulations Conner Ammon for being chosen to 2nd All-Conference Team. Congratulations Cameron Miller for honorable mention.

JH Volleyball: Their season ended with a #3 seed in their regional and won the first round game on March 18th before losing on March 19th. All conference ballots are currently out and should be announced next week.

HS Softball: The softball team has hosted four games on their new field and are currently 3-2 in the season.

HS Baseball: The baseball team has hosted four home games on their new field and are currently 4-1 in the season.

Jimmy Foster is doing a great job as Athletic Director.

APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA:

14. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve the regular meeting minutes of February 27, 2024. Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

15. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Murphy to approve the bills and payroll as presented. Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Jackson-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

16. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve the treasurer's report and co-mingled account as presented. McCabe-aye, Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

NEW BUSINESS:

Folding Chairs

17. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Jackson to approve the purchase of approximately 75 folding chairs, not to exceed $1900.00. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble- aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Metal Shelving

18. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to purchase metal shelving for the central office storage. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Field Trips

19. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Richey to approve the following out of state field trips:

K-1 Class to Mesker Park Zoo on April 26, 2024 in Evansville, IN

Pre-K to Dig N Roll on May 16, 2024, in Evansville, IN. All parents will attend with their child 8th Grade Class to Holiday World on May 22, 2024 in Santa Claus, IN

5th Grade Class to St. Louis Zoo in May 2024 in St. Louis, MO

Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Pest Control

20. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Richey to accept Meager Pest Control quote for $200 a month for all buildings. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

FY24/25 Calendar

There was discussion on the tentative calendar. Five half day professional development will be offered.

21. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Pribble to approve the FY24/25 school calendar. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Intergovernmental Co-Op

22. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to approve the intergovernmental agreement with the Southern Illinois School District Cooperative Buying to purchase food and services. Richey-aye, Jackson-aye, Pribble-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

IHSA Membership

23. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to renew the IHSA membership for FY24/25 school year. Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Jackson-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Energy Contract

24. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Jackson to accept the IEC energy contract for electric service for six months (June 1st-December 31, 2024). Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson- aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Phonic Curriculum

25. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to purchase Saxon Phonics for K-2 at a cost of $7084.70 to be paid with Title I and state/local funds. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Jackson- aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

ADJOURNMENT:

26. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Jackson to adjourn at 9:30 p.m. Jackson-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
