On May 7, Senate lawmakers made a unique fashion statement by wearing sneakers with their usual session attire and suit jackets. This gesture was to show solidarity with cancer patients and survivors throughout the state. The inspiration for this unconventional dress code came from the Coaches vs. Cancer program, a joint initiative between the American Cancer Society and the NCAA aimed at raising cancer awareness.

Every year, as part of this initiative, lawmakers are seen donning suits and sneakers at the State Capitol in support of the ongoing advocacy campaign. Senator Fowler noted that this annual awareness day at the Capitol is a small but potent gesture that aims to draw attention to the tens of thousands of citizens affected by cancer each year.
