Metropolis Firefighter Captain Clay Childers was honored at the 31st Annual Illinois Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Springfield. He received the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Medal of Valor, an accolade that pays tribute to his courage and dedication.

In October 2023, Captain Childers displayed exceptional bravery during a structure fire in Metropolis. Upon entering the burning building, he discovered a woman suffering from smoke inhalation. Despite the absence of a water source, Captain Childers successfully rescued the woman from the engulfing flames. Thanks to his swift actions and subsequent medical treatment, her life was saved.

Captain Childers' heroism extends beyond this singular event. His daily commitment to protecting his community, running towards danger and saving lives is worthy of our utmost gratitude and respect. We owe sincere thanks not only to Captain Childers but also to all those who don their uniforms every day and put their lives on the line for others.

On receiving this prestigious honor, congratulations are extended to Captain Childers for his distinguished service and well-earned recognition.
