Galatia Community Unit School District 1 Board of Education met April 23.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

The regular meeting of the Galatia Community Unit School District No. 1 Board was held in the boardroom at the Annex. Roll call was taken, and those present were Tim Pribble, Bryan McCabe, Amy Richey, and Leslie Ferrell. Elaine Jackson, Holly Murphy and B.J. Pigg were absent. Four (4) members present and three (3) members absent. Board President, Tim Pribble, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Also present: Superintendent, Shain Crank, HS Principal, Ashley Launius, and Recording Secretary, Michele Hankins.

President Pribble led the Board and attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

VISITORS:

There were no visitors.

ADDITIONS/DELETIONS TO AGENDA:

Delete 8.4 and 8.5 on agenda

EXECUTIVE SESSION:

1. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to enter Executive Session at 7:03 p.m. to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity; matters of student discipline or review executive session minutes. McCabe-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.

Holly Murphy entered the meeting at 7:08 p.m.

2. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to end Executive Session at 8:20 p.m. Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

3. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to approve the Executive Session minutes.

Elem Assistant Principal Contract

4. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve James Foster's contract as the Elementary Assistant Principal as presented for a one-year contract for the 2024/2025 school year. Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

JH/HS Assistant Principal Contract

5. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Richey to approve Stephanie Plumlee's contract as the JH/HS Assistant Principal as presented for a one-year contract for the 2024/2025 school year. McCabe- aye, Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Superintendent Contract

6. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to approve Shain Crank's contract as Galatia CUSD #1 Superintendent as presented for a three-year contract for the FY2025, FY2026, and FY2027 school years. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Individual Aide

7. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Pribble to terminate employment with Crystal Holbrook as an individual aide effective April 12, 2024. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Individual Aide

8. A motion was made by Ferrell and seconded by Murphy to employ Austyn Oshe as an individual aide for the remaining of the 2023/2024 school year. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Resignation

9. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to accept Tracy Stokich's resignation as an elementary cook effective 4/19/24. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Elementary Cook Position

10. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Richey to post an elementary cook for the 2024/2025 school year. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Resignation

11. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by McCabe to accept Michaela Noblet's resignation as a high schools English teacher, effective at the end of the 2023/2024 school year. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

English Teacher

12. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to post the high school English position. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Junior High Teaching Position

13. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to employ Matt Hall as a junior high teacher for the 2024/2025 school year, pending background checks. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy- aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

JH Baseball Coach

14. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Ferrell to employ Tyler Johnson as the junior high boys' baseball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

JH Cheer Coach

15. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to employ Lindsay McClerren as the junior high cheer coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

JH Boys' Basketball Coach

16. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by McCabe to employ Adam Neal as the junior high boys' basketball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

JH Girls' Basketball Coach

17. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to employ Aaron Allen as the junior high girls' basketball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye Pribble-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Basscats Coach

18. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Murphy to employ B. J. Pigg as the Basscats fishing coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Pribble-aye, Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, McCabe-abstain, and Richey- aye. Four (4) ayes, motion carried.

Trapcats Coach

19. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to employ Matt McLaughlin as the Trapcats trap shooting coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Pribble-aye, Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Cross Country Coach

20. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to employ Kim Hankins as the cross country coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Pribble-aye, Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, McCabe-aye, and Richey- aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

HS Girls' Basketball Coach

21. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Murphy to employ Denise Clayton as the high school girls' basketball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

HS Cheer Coach

22. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by Ferrell to employ Andrea Vinson as the high school cheer coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, and Ferrell-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

HS Boys' Basketball Coach

23. A motion was made by Pigg and seconded by Pribble to employ Zach Essex as the high school boys' basketball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Pribble-aye, Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

HS Softball Coach

24. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Ferrell to employ Dani Reynolds as the high school softball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried

HS Baseball Coach

25. A motion was made by Murphy and seconded by Richey to employ Tyler Johnson as the high school baseball coach for the 2024/2025 school year. Pribble-aye, Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Repost JH Softball Coaching Position

26. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to repost the junior high softball coach position.

Repost JH & HS Volleyball Coaching Position

27. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Ferrell to repost the junior high and high school volleyball coaching positions. Ferrell-aye, Richey-aye, Pribble-aye Murphy-abstain, and McCabe-no. Three (3) ayes, motion carried.

PRINCIPAL REPORT:

ACES: Congratulations goes to Wyatt Arnold, for placing 2nd in Physics at the ACES State competition.

Prom: Junior class sponsors Mrs. Disney-Walrack and Mr. Jones did a great job coordinating this year's Prom. Mr. Arnold and Mr. Richey went above and beyond to help with the setting up and tearing down.

State Testing: The high school students testing is complete. The elementary and junior high are almost complete. This was Mrs. Douglass' first time coordinating the testing and she did a great job. Mrs. Anderson was also helpful in making sure the tech side was up and running for the SAT testing.

Brian Games: The junior high and high school teams competed this week. The junior high team was 10th out of 29 schools.

Scholarship Night/Baccalaureate/Graduation: On May 6th will be scholarship night. Baccalaureate will be held on May 15 and graduation will be held on May 17.

Jostens: Jostens is offering a free service to our school to design a new logo.

School Based Mental Health Professional Grant: We have received confirmation that we have receive this grant. This grant will award $25,000 to the school district. The money awarded to the school can be used towards anything for the guidance/counseling office.

Stronger Connections Grant: We are currently working with the Stress and Trauma Center to apply for this grant. The amount of the grant is $105,850. If we receive this grant it will provide a full-time mental health counselor for next school year and the remainder of the money can be used to pay for our new school counselor.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT:

Solar Project: Mr. Crank has talked to solar representatives and the solar panels can be moved farther north than the original plan. This gives us the maximum benefit from the project at no additional cost.

Building Projects: All of the projects are continuing to make progress. The engineering report on the soil test has come back and our soil is not suitable to hold the 80' poles at the ballfields. It will take additional support that will cost $12,200.

The company providing and installing the pads, goals and flag in the high school gym is scheduled to start on June 3rd.

Energy Transition Community Grant: Mr. Crank has not received anything on the amount of the new grant.

2024/2025 School Calendar: The final calendar has suggestions from both schools.

Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Employee Supplemental Insurance: Mr. Crank has met with AFLAC. We are in the process of setting up a meeting with all the staff so AFLAC representatives can explain cost and benefits. This would be a change from American Fidelity. Employees will still be able to keep their American Fidelity policies if they so choose to do so. AFLAC has an office in Marion and hopefully they will provide a better level of service for us and the staff.

HVAC: The air units at the elementary and high school in the computer labs are not repairable. Both units have freon leaks that cannot be detected. We have had repairmen out three times trying to find the leaks.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

TRANSPORTATION: IDOT (Illinois Department of Transportation) inspected our buses and found several items that needed repaired. All items have been repaired.

ATHLETICS:

Jr High Volleyball: Congratulations Laney Adams and Maggie Quartana, both were selected to the 2nd team All-Conference.

Basscats: Preparations are underway for Galatia to host the IHSA Bass Fishing Sectional Tournament at Lake of Egypt on May 2nd. Twelve teams will be participating in the tournament.

Sports Banquet: The junior high banquet is scheduled for May 13th and the high school banquet will be held on May 14th

APPROVAL OF CONSENT AGENDA:

29. A motion was made by Richey and seconded by Ferrell to approve the regular meeting minutes of March 26, 2024. Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

30. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to approve the bills and payroll as presented with the additional H.E. Mitchell $68,224.10 invoices. Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, Pribble-aye, McCabe- aye, and Richey-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

31. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Ferrell to approve the treasurer's report and co-mingled account as presented. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Ferrell-aye, Pribble-aye, and Richey-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

NEW BUSINESS:

Amended Budget Meeting

32. A motion was made by McCabe and seconded by Murphy to set the FY23/24 amended budget hearing for June 25, 2024. Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, McCabe-aye, Richey-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Fuel Contracts

33. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by McCabe to accept the fuel delivery bid from Southern FS as presented, 5,000 diesel gallons at $3.816/gallon and 2,600 gallons of unleaded at $3.464/gallon. McCabe-aye, Murphy-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, and Pribble-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.

Bank Signature Card

34. A motion was made by Pribble and seconded by Murphy to remove Evelyn Potts from the Common Fund checking account. Pribble-aye, Richey-aye, Ferrell-aye, Murphy-aye, and McCabe-aye. Five (5) ayes, motion carried.
